Strengthen the Hazardous Waste Management Capacity of National Departmental Agencies and Promote Best Available Technologies and Best Environmental Practices

Summary of project activities and results:

– Design of a survey to gather information on the status of waste disposal facilities in the region.

– Design and conduct a distance learning course and a face-to-face course for stakeholders in the region on environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.

– Promote environmentally sound management of hazardous and other wastes, including promotion of best available techniques and best environmental practices (BAT and BEP).

– Assist in national capacity building in this area.

– Update technical guidelines on hazardous waste management (English and Spanish).

– Develop and implement sensitization and awareness-raising activities aimed at promoting sound hazardous waste management.

CLASSROOM COURSE

The Regional Face-to-Face Course on Waste and Hazardous Waste Management was held in San José, Costa Rica, from September 30 to October 2, 2014. The course was held over 3 days at the AUROLA hotel, and on the morning of October 1, a visit was made to a battery recycling plant 30 km from the hotel.
