The GEF/UNIDO project “Strengthening national initiatives and improving regional cooperation for the environmentally sound management of persistent organic compounds in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Latin American countries” involves the following 13 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, El Salvador, Uruguay and Venezuela (UNIDO ID: 140297 and GEF ID: 5554). The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) acts as the implementing agency (IA) of the GEF (Global Environment Facility). The BCCC-SCRC is the executing agency for the following countries: Costa Rica, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. In cooperation with the countries and taking into account UNIDO requirements, national technical and economic proposals were developed to implement the project in these countries.
The overall objective of this full-scale project is to strengthen national initiatives and improve regional cooperation for the environmentally sound management of POPs in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Latin American countries. The project includes the following four components:
1. Strengthening national e-waste management initiatives;
2. Strengthening national capacities in e-waste dismantling and recycling facilities / infrastructure;
3. Improved regional cooperation in e-waste management;
4. Monitoring and evaluation.
