A Plastic Waste Partnership has been established to mobilize resources, interests and expertise from business, government, academia and civil society to improve and promote the environmentally sound management of plastic waste at global, regional and national levels and to prevent and minimize its generation.
This partnership promotes action and encourages dialogue between governments, regional and local authorities, Regional Seas Programs, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and academia towards the ultimate goal of significantly reducing and, in the long term, eliminating the discharge of plastic waste and microplastics into the environment, particularly the marine environment.
The activities will be carried out by its working group and will be administered by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. The terms of reference for the Partnership describe its work plan for 2020/21 and its work modalities.
This Basel Convention Plastic Waste initiative was launched on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Eynard Palace in Geneva, sponsored by the Government of Norway and hosted by the City of Geneva.
