GMP I

Global Monitoring Plan – Phase I | 2008-2011

Background

In Latin America and the Caribbean, POPs monitoring to establish spatial trends have not yet been carried out. In addition, the matrices chosen by the Stockholm Convention Conference of the Parties. for the GMP (air, breast milk and human blood), have only been analyzed on a few occasions. There are other national priorities for POPs analysis, such as food and water or soil monitoring.

For breast milk, UNEP, in collaboration with WHO, initiated a study to generate breast milk data for the 12 POPs listed in the Convention. Samples were analyzed at the State Laboratory for Chemical and Veterinary Food Analysis (CVUA) in Freiburg, Germany, the WHO reference laboratory for POPs analysis in human milk.
