Information gathered in LAC countries through pilot inventories identified the need for environmentally sound management (ESM) of mercury-containing wastes in priority economic sectors.
This project is the first phase of a technical assistance and capacity building cooperation agreement in the region between the US-EPA – Basel Secretariat.
Main objective
To assist Parties in the minimization and environmentally sound management of mercury-containing wastes that affect the majority of exposed populations in various economic sectors, including the health sector in several LAC countries in the context of the implementation of the Basel Convention.
Specific objectives
– Develop methodologies and practical tools for the preparation and implementation of national mercury waste ESM plans.
– To assist Parties to the Basel Convention in determining their priorities in terms of ESM of mercury wastes and the development of national mercury waste management plans. ESM of mercury wastes and the development of national mercury waste management plans;
– Establish a regional plan for environmentally sound long-term storage of mercury wastes in Latin America and the Caribbean.
– Develop capacity to control transboundary movements of mercury wastes and prevent illegal trafficking of wastes.
– Develop an awareness-raising and sensitization program for policy makers of the parties to the of the parties to the Basel Convention.
