The following information is a summary of the results obtained as part of the project “Addressing marine litter and plastic pollution through increased knowledge and cooperation in the South Atlantic countries with the support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Basel Convention Coordinating Center-Stockholm Convention Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (BCCC-SCRC), and the National Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (DINABISE) of the Ministry of Environment of Uruguay. This arose as part of a working agreement between the latter and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The implementation period was from May to September 2022.
The overall objective of the project was to promote the reduction of marine litter, plastics and microplastics based on research, scientific knowledge, appropriate policy recommendations and increased cooperation and awareness in the South Atlantic countries: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
