UN Environment, through its Chemicals and Waste Area, established a Cooperation Agreement with the Ministry of Housing, Land Management and Environment (hereinafter, MVOTMA) for the implementation of the project\u00a0Review and Update of the National Implementation Plan for the Stockholm Convention in Uruguay,<\/em>\u00a0with funding from the Global Environment Facility (hereinafter, GEF) and co-financing from the MVOTMA as Executing Agency, which is administered by the Stockholm Convention Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, headquartered in our country.<\/p>\n The implementation of the project will enable the country to comply with its obligations by revising and updating the National Implementation Plan for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, prepared in 2006.<\/p>\n The first stage of the update of the National Plan involves a national inventory of the new POPs; the second stage involves the revision of the inventory of the 12 initial POPs, this information being the basis for the establishment of priorities, the development of action plans and the determination of management strategies. In addition, it also constitutes a relevant tool for future monitoring of the effectiveness of the implemented action plan.<\/p>\n A specific year was determined for carrying out the inventory and preparing the new National Implementation Plan that represents the country’s situation regarding POPs, and it should be chosen in such a way that the greatest possible amount of systematized information is available and that most of the POPs have been included in the Convention.
